Professional branding is the voice or theme of people marketing themselves and their careers as brands. You probably don’t think much about having a brand yourself. This idea is unusual to most people. But in today’s online world, the first thing employers, recruiters and colleagues search is your online presence, as both good and bad, last forever on the internet.

The aim of professional branding is to express your unique value to an employer, and differentiate your skills, experiences, and abilities from your competition. Your professional brand is how you promote yourself. It should be unique, credible, consistent, and relevant. But it is not to create a false online image, it is to share your credible work and help find better opportunities in the future. As you begin to create your professional brand, it requires extensive self-reflection and introspection, both internally and externally. It helps only if you know yourself – which surprisingly few people do. Most people find it extremely difficult to describe themselves. You have to meet all of the subconscious expectations and go beyond the ordinary to truly impress.

It helps you showcase your areas of expertise, it would be great if people think of YOU when they think of your field. Those days are gone when professional branding was only for celebrities or executives. It is an ongoing process of establishing a prescribed image or impression in the mind of others about an individual, group, or organization. Professional branding is about managing your name — in a world of misinformation, disinformation, and semi-permanent Google records, it’s very necessary to make them know the actual You. Going to a job interview? Chances are there they Googled your name.

The same is true of Richard Branson (Virgin), Arianna Huffington (Thrive Global), Gary Vaynerchuck (VaynerMedia), and countless other highly successful people. They all have strong professional brands that they leverage to increase exposure and attract more customers for their companies.

To come up in this competitive world our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called YOU. No one wants to blend in and make people struggle to find you.
